As much a block party on a mild May evening in Miami as a reinterpretation of classic Shakespeare, the performance of “Romeo & Juliet Outside the Box” on the plaza of the YoungArts’ Biscayne Boulevard campus Friday delivered what its creators, playwright, actor and director Tarell Alvin McCraney and filmmaker Andrew Hevia had promised: an experience.
Theater purists may scoff at the idea at their own peril.

In a career spanning more than 20 years and two dozen recordings, Cuban pianist and composer Omar Sosa has methodically constructed a distinctive style. It draws from many sources, including Impressionist composers such as Ravel and Debussy, Cuban pianist Rubén González — an old master who found international fame late in life with the Buena Vista Social Club — and jazz icon Thelonious Monk.

When the stated goal is to deliver a poem to the more than 2.6 million residents of Miami-Dade County, politely inviting people to readings and hoping for the best is not a promising option.
So O, Miami, the annual festival celebrating National Poetry Month that begins today, did the next reasonable thing: it took to skywriting, putting fake parking tickets with poems in car windshields, holding a “Poetry Is Dead” parade, having poems sneakily sown into thrift store clothing and more.
